Northwestern Polytechnical University (NPU) began to recruit graduates in 1956 and had trained 197 graduates by 1965. As one of the first universities authorized to enroll graduate students and grant doctor’s and master’s degree,NPU set up its Graduate School in 1996. And it was identified as one of 34 universities for graduate enrollment reform in 2003, one of the 25 universities to grant doctoral degree of engineering in 2011 and one of the 11 universities that can carry out independent audit of degree authorization in 2019.

By September 2019, we had enrolled 74,683 graduate students, including 13,680 doctoral students, 65,363 master students (including 12,289 part-time degree students) and 880 international students. A total of 54,772 degrees had been awarded, including 7,027 doctorates and 47,695 master’s degrees (including 216 international graduate students). At present, there are 15432 graduate students, including 10,640 master students and 4,792 doctoral students. We have offered various programs in graduate education, such as “undergraduate student direct entry for the doctorate course” and “master-doctor combined program” in the form of full-time and part-time training.

As of September 2019, we have already established 21 first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization centers and 1 second-class discipline doctoral degree authorization center, as well as 34 first-class discipline master degree authorization centers, covering Engineering, Science, Management, Literature, Economics, Law, Education, Medicine and Art. There are 2 first-class national key disciplines, 7 second-class national key disciplines, 2 national key (cultivation) disciplines, 7 key disciplines in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the integration of two industries, 4 key disciplines in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the supporting basic disciplines, 2 new interdisciplinary key disciplines in the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, 10 disciplines in the list of the first batch of national defense characteristic disciplines in the 13th Five-Year Plan, and 2 disciplines in the list of "double first-class" construction disciplines in the Ministry of Education. In addition, NPU also owns 5 doctoral degree authorization centers and 13 master's degree authorization centers.

We have a high-quality tutor team with well-known scholars as leaders. There are 911 doctoral tutors and 1812 master tutors. The graduate tutors in our university have profound academic achievements and rich teaching experience. They have undertaken a large number of scientific research programs, such as the National Natural Science Fund, National Science and Technology programs What’s more, The graduate school also boasts its excellent scientific research institutions of state-level key laboratories and engineering experimental centers.

We have strengthened our exchanges and cooperation with other countries in order to enable graduate students have more opportunities to participate in scientific research. we signed a number of international academic exchanges and cooperation agreements with more than 280 universities and research institutes in the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Belgium, Japan, Russia and Ukraine.More than 82 well known foreign scholars and experts are employed as professors of our university. Every year, many overseas scholars deliver lectures or carry out cooperative research in NPU. And there are various ways of fostering graduates. In the past three years, the number of students who studied overseas sponsored by Chinese government or gained the joint cultivation in our university has reached about 600.

In the spirit of the 19th National Congress of CPC and the National Education Conference, NPU continues to deepen the reform of graduate education and teaching, aiming at achieving the goal of “diversification, innovation and internationalization”. Adhering to the principle of cultivating specialists with morality, we put much emphasis on improving the graduate education system in order to produce qualified graduates for our country.
